There are a few different types of statistics software you can get for your website. One type of software is based on another person's server. You simply place code in your site for tracking purposes. It's easy to set up and fairly inexpensive. The other kind is a software package you can purchase and install on your own web server. I'll talk about each in this article.
If you decide to go the route of getting a service to keep your statistics I would suggest a service called SuperStats. All you have to do is place code on each of your pages and their website will track all of your statistics information for you. SuperStats is a very comprehensive package that shows you every possible statistic you would need to track your visitors movements on your site. It is very affordable, all you have to do is pay a monthly fee for the service and all of your statistics are kept in their database for the life of your website.
If you run your website on your own web server, I would suggest checking out WebTrends. It is a very powerful solution that has full comprehensive statistics tracking for your website. The good thing about purchasing WebTrends is that it is a one time investment for your web server. They also offer an offsite service like SuperStats. I recommend SuperStats for the offsite service because of my personal experience with them, but check both sites out and choose for yourself.
