GIF's and JPEG's are the two most popular graphic formats used on the internet. It's very easy to create these file formats if you have the right tools. Two programs that work the best for creating these types of images are Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. I use Illustrator to create my own images and Photoshop for scanned images, such as photos.
Once you have created your images in these programs you simply have to "export" them and the program will create a GIF or JPEG of your image. The differences between GIF's and JPEG's are small. I've found that JPEG's work better for images I have personally created. JPEG's also work better with text images, such as a logo. Your text images will be much smoother than if you use a GIF file. One drawback to JPEG's is that they tend to be larger files than GIF's so you must be sure to optomize them before you upload them to your website.
GIF files tend to be better used with scanned or digital photos that you have created. Your GIF files will also be smaller and give better resoloution with most photos and scanned images. GIF's are also easier to use if you are thinking about making animated GIF's for your website.
