Search Engines and Directories
Home -- Promoting -- Promotion Tips -- Search Engines and Directories
There are some differences between search engine and directories on the internet that can affect your search engine marketing promotions. In the beginning of search engines these you could distinguish rather easily between the two. Recently, true search engines have been adding directory sites, while directories have been adding search engine results.
Let me explain a little more in-depth. Let's take Google for instance. Google is considered a true search engine. When you search by a certain keyword the results that are returned are any web page that matches your search. Yahoo on the other hand lists their results by webs ite broken down into categories. The reason that this is important is that directories are more difficult to get into. You must carefully submit these by hand and Yahoo has strict rules for getting into their directory site. Each site is reviewed by a human before being entered into their directory, and if you're rejected it's difficult to get reviewed again.
It's very important that once you build your site to make sure you have plenty of content and that the site fits a certain category before you submit to Yahoo. If you don't your "site" will be considered just a "web page" according to Yahoo and other directories and you'll miss out on valuable traffic you can get from these sources.
