One thing about people surfing the web is that they are very impatient. They want fast loading pages, easy navigation, and to find things quickly. Even if you have the most nicely deisnged website on the internet, surfers will not be able to locate all of your information on your home page. If they can find all of your site's information on the home page they'll be very disappointed when they surf your site!
This is why it's a must to have a search box on your website. On my site I've found that 10-15% of my visitors use it when they enter the site for the first time. Maybe they're looking for something that's in an article that's not on your home page. If you don't have a search box, they'll exit without ever knowing that your website had the content to help them.
A great service for putting a search box on your website is called SiteMiner. It's very easy to set up and just requires a small piece of code that you cut and paste on to your website to make your own personal search box. You can re-index the site as often as you want.
