If you're currently working on search engine marketing and are looking to increase your rankings, work on your link popularity. You should have as many links as possible from sites that contain content like yours. Many search engines are now taking into account how many links you have going to your site, and make it very difficult to get good rankings without them. Improving your link popularity will not only increase your sites search engine rankings, it will get you more traffic from other sites. Do not be afraid to give reciprocal links to your competition, you will both get equal benefit from the exchange. A good way to trade links is simply send an e-mail to the websites owner stating that you find their site interesting and are looking to exchange links. I generally get a 10-20% response rate from people who want to trade.

Arelis is a robot program that will find sites that relate to yours, and build pages that contain links from these sites. You can then e-mail site owners and ask for reciprocal links. The program also lets you manage your link directory easily.
